NegationFrom Al-DuroosThere are several ways to negate a statement in Arabic. ليس (leysa)The word ليس (leysa) can be used to negate a sentence. For example, one could say ليس سليم هن الأردن (leysa Salim min al-Jordan) or "Salim is not from Jordan". Leysa uses suffix endings in the same way as past tense (perfect) verbs do: ليس (leysa) - هو (he) ليستْ (leysat) - هي (she) ليستُ (leystu) - أنا (I) ليسنا (leysna) - نحن (we) ليستَ (leysta) - أنتَ (you - m) ليستِ (leysti) - أنتِ (you - f) What follows "leysa" should be a phrase with all elements of complete sentence, though the subject can be incorporated into the "leysa" word with the suffix. The phrase that follows "leysa" could be a verbal sentence/phrase or a nominal sentence/phrase. The subject of "leysa" is in the nominative case and the predicate is accusative. |
